Apartment owner seriously injured while trying to extinguish fire

The Wolfsberg fire department had to respond to an apartment fire in the city center on Monday evening. The firefighters had to rescue a seriously injured man from the apartment.

It is still completely unclear why the fire broke out in the kitchen. "We were alerted to the fire and when we arrived, the kitchen was fully engulfed in flames," explains Christoph Gerak, commander of the Wolfsberg fire department. The owner of the apartment had probably already tried to get control of the flames beforehand.

"Left the apartment screaming"
According to the police, a 56-year-old man from the Wolfsberg district tried to extinguish cooking oil that had ignited on the stove with water. "The person suffered serious injuries in the process," says Gerak in an interview with "Krone". "He was able to leave the apartment himself, screaming," the officers describe. Neighbors became aware of this, informed the emergency services and tried to extinguish the fire themselves.

After receiving medical treatment on site, the seriously injured man was transferred to Wolfsberg Regional Hospital and flown from there to Graz Regional Hospital. The amount of property damage has not yet been determined.
