It often only takes a moment of carelessness to change a life forever - as happened on Sunday evening in Ottakring when a two-year-old girl reached into a running meat grinder with her hand. Her mother (28) and a friend were nearby, but took their eyes off the little girl for a fatal moment.

The image went through the minds of the emergency services who rushed to the scene: the toddler was stuck in the machine up to half of her forearm, screaming loudly. Paramedics from the professional rescue service immediately began providing emergency medical care to the little patient, which proved to be extremely complex.

The child was seriously injured and taken to hospital; the investigation into the circumstances of the incident is still ongoing.
