Emotional action! Bayern pay tribute to “Emperor Franz”

At the annual general meeting of FC Bayern Munich on Sunday morning, deceased members around Franz Beckenbauer were also remembered. As a tribute to the icon, his shirt number 5 will no longer be assigned at Bayern.

"The number 5 will be reserved for a unique legacy," explained Hainer to great applause in the presence of Beckenbauer's widow Heidi and son Joel. "Because our club and its history are simply unthinkable without Franz." The President saw the members' reaction to his proposal as approval. Hainer: "This year, FC Bayern has lost the greatest personality in its history. Dear Franz, you have made the club what it is today."

At the beginning of the event, all members who had died since the last Annual General Meeting were remembered - including Beckenbauer and Andreas Brehme. Beckenbauer, world champion as a player in 1974 and as team manager in 1990, died on January 7 at the age of 78 and was buried in his hometown of Munich. Ex-professional Brehme, who had scored Germany's penalty in the 1990 final to win the World Cup title, followed in mid-February at the age of 63.
