Search operation for missing hiker in the Gailtal valley

A feverish search for a missing female hiker has been underway in the Gailtal mountains since Saturday evening. The vacationer had not returned from her tour. The search for the young woman continued until late in the evening. On Sunday, the German woman was found dead.

The holidaymaker had driven to the Rudnigalm in her car on Friday, where she also slept in the parking lot, to set off on a hike on Saturday. "She then failed to show up at the agreed meeting point with a friend," the Carinthia Provincial Police Directorate reported. A search operation was therefore launched for the 26-year-old.

"The search for the missing woman was interrupted with the participation of the Hermagor Alpine Police, the police helicopter and the Hermagor mountain rescue team at around 10.30 p.m. without any results," according to the provincial police directorate. 

Rescuers find the dead
On Sunday, the rescuers launched a new search operation for the missing German woman. "One of our teams finally found the woman dead in the Trog-Zweikofel area," explains Hermagor's mountain rescue chief Horst Liebetegger, who was on duty with his team. It is still completely unclear how the 26-year-old died.
