Hamann on Rangnick:
“I question whether he is a good fit for FC Bayern”
The former German soccer team player Didi Hamann is very skeptical as to whether signing ÖFB team manager Ralf Rangnick will help FC Bayern succeed. "That Ralf Rangnick has his qualities is undisputed. But I question whether he is a good fit for FC Bayern," said the 50-year-old in an interview with Münchner Merkur/tz. The former Munich footballer recalled that Bayern actually wanted to sign possession coach Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen.
"And five weeks later they want to bring in a coach - if he says yes - whose soccer is based on not possessing the ball. Bayern have to ask themselves how they want to play soccer," said Hamann. "I have my doubts as to whether it will work, because this is not Bayern Munich - and you don't have the players either."
Schöttel confirms offer
Rangnick still has a contract with the ÖFB until at least the end of the World Cup qualifiers at the end of 2025, but has received an offer from Bayern. This was confirmed by ÖFB sporting director Peter Schöttel on Wednesday evening. Rangnick is now considering whether he wants to accept the offer from Munich. Hamann commented: "Ralf Rangnick has really built something up in Austria. A move to FC Bayern would put a lot at risk for him. He would be giving up a lot to work for a club where a lot of things are very unstable at the moment."
On the other hand, he now has former companions at the club, allies. "Now is probably the best time to implement what he wants to do. Whether that's good for the club or not, I'll leave that for another day."
"That would be fatal"
Hamann also pointed out that Rangnick would be the next official to come to Säbener Straße from Leipzig, "although the RB construct is an absolute enemy among the fans. Bayern always preach 'Mia san Mia', that's what they've built up. But the identification, the solidarity with the fans also makes this club special. Losing that would be fatal".
