Klagenfurt’s swimming pool projects that all fell through
For almost two decades, plans for the construction of an adventure pool have been under discussion in the provincial capital - so far without result. The "Krone" took a closer look at the projects of recent years.
Next Tuesday, Mayor Christian Scheider will meet with Provincial Premier Peter Kaiser for a crisis summit. The planned sports pool on the Südring is on the agenda. This project, too, could soon be in danger of coming to an end. The city urgently needs a new facility for water sports enthusiasts and families after the dilapidated indoor pool in Gasometergasse had to close in 2021.
Pool right next to Lake Wörthersee
It has now been two decades since the first push for a new indoor pool. In 2006, Mayor Harald Scheucher proudly presented the design for a building between the lido and Maria Loretto. Visitors would even have been able to swim out into the lake from this indoor pool. It was never built.
A similar fate befell other projects that failed either due to political will, official hurdles or lack of funding. This also includes an initiative by Mayor Christian Scheider, who wanted to build an indoor pool in combination with the ice rink l in 2010.
No interim pool either
This was followed by further attempts by politicians and private operators who wanted to build pools of various designs, including a premium wellness pool, in the eastern bay of Lake Wörthersee. They all fell through.
The discussions about a new pool for the provincial capital heated things up. Because politicians and experts could not agree on the most suitable location, a public participation process was even launched to clarify whether the pool should be built in Ostbucht or at Minimundus.
Another example of the failure of those responsible: Not even the promised interim pool at the heating plant was erected.
