Trial in Leoben
Drunk driver knocks down scooter driver and helper
Last November on the B77 in Weißkirchen, a drunk driver (25) overlooked an e-scooter driver (50) and his first aider in an accident and hit them both. The man died on the road, the woman survived seriously injured. The 25-year-old is now on trial.
The tragic story has caused heads to spin in police circles. However, it will probably never be completely solved because one of the people involved is dead. This person - a 50-year-old man at the time of the incident - was driving his e-scooter on the B77 for whatever reason. And on a wet road in the dark.
When he fell, the driver of an oncoming car noticed. He stopped his car and switched on the hazard warning lights. His wife, a 62-year-old woman from the Murtal district, got out and rushed to help the injured man.
Charges of involuntary manslaughter and involuntary bodily harm
And then the terrible thing happened: the 25-year-old driver of a car overlooked both the casualty and the first aider and hit them both. While the 50-year-old died at the scene of the accident, the seriously injured woman survived. As it turned out, the driver had got behind the wheel despite being moderately drunk.
The man will have to stand trial next Friday for involuntary manslaughter and negligent bodily harm.
Sabine Anzenberger, Sprecherin des Landesgerichts Leoben
For the 25-year-old, the accident now has legal repercussions. As Sabine Anzenberger, spokeswoman for the Leoben Regional Court, confirmed in response to an inquiry by the "Krone" newspaper, he will have to answer to the criminal court next Friday for involuntary manslaughter and involuntary bodily harm.
