11,000 Styrian households will soon be surveyed by the state on their mobility behavior. The aim is to obtain important data for future transport planning. Until now, the survey has been carried out throughout Austria, but this year, for the first time, the province of Styria is conducting it itself.

How do Styrians get from A to B in everyday life? The province now wants to find out exactly for the purposes of transport planning - from roads to cycle paths to public transport - and is sending out questionnaires to 11,000 Styrian households before the summer. The city of Graz is excluded as it is conducting its own surveys.

Why the province itself is taking the helm
Background: Previously (most recently in 2014), the survey was carried out by the federal government throughout Austria, with the province paying for it. "Due to a change in methodology and approach in the federal survey, the state contribution would have increased almost sevenfold to around 1.3 million euros. After ten years, however, there is an urgent need for an update, which is why we are conducting a Styria-wide sample survey of mobility behavior on our own initiative. EUR 600,000 was approved for this in the last government meeting," explains Transport Minister Anton Lang (SPÖ).

"We will send out questionnaires to around 11,000 white-green households before the summer. This means that around 25,000 people will be invited to take part in the survey. We should be able to present the first results in the fall," says project manager Peter Sturm from the A16, Transport and State Building Department
