Combustion engine ban 2035: why it won’t work out
The "Krone" story quoted throughout Europe on the imminent lifting of the ban on combustion engines planned for 2035 is understandably not to everyone's taste. However, the then ambitious plans of EPP Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the heads of state are in serious doubt. Krone+ shows a new, leaked Commission document (see below) in which the "e-car-only principle" is simply no longer feasible. And why even von der Leyen's own Commissioner is stabbing her in the back.
Nerves are often frayed ahead of the upcoming EU elections in June, in which the ban on combustion engines plays a central role alongside other issues. Originally, after a very close vote with the responsible transport ministers, the EU Commission had planned to ban new vehicles with combustion engines from 2035 and to rely 100% on e-cars (e-only). But now e-cars, of all things, are to blame for the fact that this will not happen.
