Temperature records tumble in Styria
Last weekend, Bruck an der Mur set a new temperature record of exactly 30 degrees - never before has it been so hot so early in Austria. This weekend also gave a foretaste of summer - but other Styrian cities are leading the way.
Temperatures continue to climb and climb: In Hartberg, it was 30.9 degrees Celsius at 3.30 pm on Sunday. This made the district town the hottest in Austria! It was closely followed by Bruck (30.7), Deutschlandsberg (30.5) and Graz (30.2 at the university measuring station).
"Even for April, these peak values are very early. In the past, we used to see temperatures like this - if at all - at the end of April," says meteorologist Martin Templin from Ubimet. Why exactly is Styria the "hotspot"? "It's due to a foehn wind from the northwest," explains Templin. "The light breeze from the direction of Burgenland brings the Mürztal and eastern Styria in particular towards 30 degrees."
Styrians made the most of the weather on Sunday for long bike rides, chatting over an Aperol spritz in the garden, hiking and sometimes even swimming in the lakes.

However, the record temperatures won't stay with us for long. "The cold front that is now over Germany will reach Upper Styria and then the south from midday on Monday. During the night, it will get thundery and cool down considerably," predicts Templin.
What does that mean in concrete terms? "On Tuesday it will be six to 13 degrees and raining, on Wednesday we can expect four to 13 degrees." Summer won't be making a comeback for some time. Next weekend it will probably be around 15 degrees at most in Graz.
