Dispute before the election about Saalfelden eyesores

The empty spaces and the yawning emptiness - shortly before the municipal and mayoral elections, criticism is growing louder in the third largest town in the province of Salzburg.

Standstill and eyesore: these two words are often used when talking about the old building yard. The building has been empty since 2008 and is becoming more and more dilapidated every year. "Back in 2018, we called for something to be done. But nothing has happened," says Deputy Mayor Thomas Haslinger (ÖVP). The Greens have one concrete idea: the building yard could become a new youth center after renovation. For decades, the youth center has been located in basement rooms near the Bergland housing estate. "The children belong outside," emphasizes Hans Bichler.

City manager Erich Rohrmoser (SPÖ) doesn't think the current state of the building yard is so bad: "Commuters can park their vehicles. And it would be good as an alternative area for the Jufersbach Nord construction site." Jufersbach Nord is the name of the gravel area (see picture above) of another long-empty eyesore: it was the place where three traditional but too old houses were demolished years ago - including the Liendlwirt. Cars have now taken the place here too. But there are plans to build here soon: From the fall, says Haslinger. More like spring, says Rohrmoser. But that's what they said the year before. Residential buildings up to 19 meters high are to be built, which the Greens criticize: "Too high and too densely built," they say.

This leads to the next Saalfelden problem: the yawning emptiness in the town center. Too little is happening, there is too little, is the criticism. "For decades, that was the intention. Revitalization was not the first priority," criticizes Haslinger. The Greens agree: "The municipality can do more," says Bichler.

However, Rohrmoser doesn't just see the ball as being in the city's court: "A lot of things are connected." In some cases, owners are reluctant. However, he has already announced the first project: Mittergasse. "Perhaps it will soon become an event location on summer nights."
