"Shake things up":
Last Generation now wants to enter the EU Parliament
The protest group Last Generation wants to stand as a candidate in the EU elections in June. This was announced by the spokesperson of the German section, Carla Hinrichs, on Wednesday. "Now we want to take our resistance from the streets to Parliament," said Hinrichs. The group is known for not mincing its words. Now it is time to stir up the EU Parliament.
The Last Generation is the "voice of those willing to survive", added Henning Jeschke, one of the group's founders.
250,000 votes needed to enter the EU Parliament
For the intended candidacy in the EU elections in June, it was very close. Many had said that it couldn't possibly work. However, a share of around 0.5 percent of the vote in the European elections would be enough, i.e. around 250,000 votes.
There is now a "community challenge" to start with: they are trying to find 100 volunteers internally for the campaign and collect 50,000 euros, said Jeschke.
Founded in 2021
The group, which was founded in 2021 after a hunger strike, had spent two years mainly organizing road blockades with glued activists to protest against what they saw as a climate policy that was too slow. It recently announced that it would no longer be using this form of protest.
