Baby murder at the border: mother arrested!

The case shocked the country: in January, a dead newborn was discovered at the Nickelsdorf border crossing in Burgenland. Left behind in a sports bag, which had been placed next to a trash can. Now the drama has been resolved – there have been four arrests, including the child's mother. A terrible detail: she is only 17 years old.

According to information from "Krone," camera footage showed a suspect getting off a bus from Romania at the end of January with a black bag, walking toward a blind spot and placing the baby—a girl—in the bag.

Trail to Romania
The infant was beaten to death and left in freezing temperatures like a piece of trash. Travelers discovered the bag and the dead baby a few hours later. The murder investigation was launched immediately, and a feverish search for the coach began. The trail led to Romania. 

Now, thanks to the successful investigation by the Burgenland State Criminal Police Office and the public prosecutor's office in cooperation with the international police authority Interpol, the mother of the infant has been tracked down, as the "Krone" newspaper reported on Thursday. She is only 17 years old. The young Romanian woman has already been arrested, along with two other women and a man who had helped the girl.

Suspects in custody
The arrests took place in recent days in Romania (where the man was caught) and in Germany (where the three women were arrested). The four suspects are currently in custody. They are to be transferred to Austria. Only then will the interrogations take place, which should provide more details about the crime and the motive. It is still unclear what roles the arrested persons played in this tragedy.
