Vorarlberg is among the leaders in bus services

The bus service in Vorarlberg ranks second behind Burgenland in an Austria-wide comparison of federal states. Nevertheless, the network should be expanded further.  

A look at the public transport timetables in the federal states shows: In absolute terms, Lower Austria has the largest number of regional bus services; in relation to population size, Burgenland is ahead of Vorarlberg and Tyrol, as a recent study by Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ) shows.

Outside of Vienna, there is an average of 31 regional bus service kilometers per inhabitant, in Vorarlberg it is 49. "A good public transport service relieves the roads, which not only benefits local residents, but also everyone who is dependent on a car. In addition, public transport enables affordable mobility for everyone. This makes it all the more important to further expand the service," says VCÖ expert Michael Schwendinger.

The Vorarlberg climate ticket, for example, which can be used for a whole year on public transport in Vorarlberg, costs just 434 euros. If the official mileage allowance of 50 cents is taken as a basis, 434 euros will get you just 868 kilometers by car, the VCÖ points out. The VCÖ particularly praises Landbus Unterland: around 100 buses are in operation on 36 routes. The buses run every quarter of an hour on the main routes and every hour in small communities.
