“It damn well shouldn’t be a taboo subject”
Former professional cyclist Moran Vermeulen, who tried to take his own life last year, speaks openly about mental problems and mental illness, as did figure skater Stefanie Pesendorfer recently. However, these two athletes are the exception - the "Krone" knows why.
When former German soccer goalkeeper Robert Enke took his own life 15 years ago, the subject of depression became the dominant topic overnight and suddenly a subject that had previously been completely ignored had to be talked about, especially in top-class sport. Thanks in part to the Robert Enke Foundation set up by his widow Teresa, much has improved in recent years, but mental problems are still a taboo subject in society and above all in sport. The "Krone" spoke to affected athletes and a sports psychologist about why this is still the case?
