"Bachelor" Ralf Rangnick and his squad for EURO 2024 in Germany: many places are no longer available. Some question marks remain due to injuries. Will only ten players from the 2021 tournament be back?

Ralf Rangnick, the "Bachelor" - the team boss can award 23 roses on June 7 at the latest, but he does not yet know whether he will take more players to the training camp than are allowed at the EURO and then be unable to give some of them a rose.

Rangnick has called up a total of 49 players in his twenty games as team boss so far, and he can include a little less than half of them in the EURO squad. The statistics alone show a tendency (see chart) as to who has a good chance with the German. Those who have played the most and have been called up the most often are in pole position, and it can currently be assumed that there are 17 fixed starters - provided that Red-White-Red are spared the injury bug from now on.

How will the squad be mixed?
Almost two months before the squad is nominated, the "Krone" takes an initial barometer of form - how many roses have already been awarded, who can hope to be in the "final", i.e. EURO 2024 in Germany, and how will Rangnick divide up the squad? Three goalkeepers, of course. And then: seven in defense? Midfield eight to nine? Attack four to five?

In detail:

• Goal: Alex Schlager and Pentz are fixed, Lawal has the best chance of winning the third "goalkeeper's rose".

• Defense: Three central defenders and two players each on the outside? Five (Posch, Lienhart, Danso, Wöber, Mwene) are probably fixed, Lainer, Querfeld, Daniliuc, Trauner (injured since the beginning of February) are further candidates.

• Midfield: Seven men are clearly on course for the EURO (Xaver Schlager, Sabitzer, Laimer, Seiwald, Wimmer, Grillitsch and Schmid), if there are only eight, then Prass, Seidl, Kainz and Cham will probably be vying for this place, if there are nine, two of this quartet can hope.

• Attack: Arnautovic (if he's fit again), Gregoritsch and Baumgartner are the ones to beat, the big question is how many will be added - one (Weimann) or a second (Entrup)?

• Question mark: Alaba and Sarkaria - a race against time for both.

One thing is pretty certain: more than half of the EURO 2021 squad will no longer be there, so it's possible that only ten players will "survive".
