For many, the key to happiness: their own press house in a cellar lane.

They are places of peace and conviviality. If you want to buy a press house with a cellar, you may have to shell out up to tens of thousands of euros, depending on the location, size and condition. More and more cellar lane fans are therefore acquiring old buildings and tackling the work themselves. The state is now providing experts to help.

There were times when cellar pipes were filled in if the structure of the press house could no longer be saved. Today, in some popular cellar alleys, you can count yourself lucky if there is still a rustic cellar building to buy.

Living cultural heritage with new uses
Once places of strenuous winegrowing work, now trendy venues for events, celebrations and traditional events - on the outskirts or outside of towns and cities, surrounded by beautiful countryside: more and more people are taking the initiative and renovating old press houses, which are more common and cheaper to buy than fully renovated buildings.

Building rules for a visually harmonious cellar lane
You can still find them, often no longer visible, because nature has already overgrown the entrance to the remaining cellar tube. Then you can rebuild your press house according to your own ideas. But - no matter how good you are with a trowel and spatula: Good advice is then expensive, because building regulations pay close attention to ensuring that rebuilds and renovations also match the surrounding architectural style.

Building advice is now also available for cellar lanes
As part of the "NÖ gestalten" (Design Lower Austria) campaign, experienced cellar lane consultants are now available to help with planning and give tips on site. "The aim is also to breathe new life into less popular ensembles," says Stephan Pernkopf, Vice Provincial Minister: "Because cellar lanes should not be quiet museum villages, but lively places where tradition, conviviality and customs are cultivated."
