Even before the explosive fire incident, there were often problems around the constantly overcrowded asylum center in Steyregg (Upper Austria) last year. According to a parliamentary question from the FPÖ, there were an incredible 90 police operations there last year. In the meantime, 14 young people have been relocated and the support staff more than doubled.

The asylum accommodation in a former hotel in Steyregg became sadly famous throughout Austria shortly after Christmas. During a firefighting operation, female firefighters were harassed by young asylum seekers. The police had to be called out, nobody was injured in the incident, but there were heated discussions and even a crisis summit.

29 questions for the Minister of the Interior
The case was also used as an opportunity to put a parliamentary question to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). FPÖ National Councillor Hannes Amesbauer had put a whopping 29 questions to the Minister about the situation surrounding the asylum home. Now the answers are in, and they are quite interesting.

They show that the home was actually consistently overcrowded in 2023. A maximum of 60 residents were supposed to be admitted, but this was only the case between June 1 and July 15. In the other months, there were up to 150 young people in Steyregg. A total of 636 males were cared for over the course of the year - since July it has mainly been unaccompanied minors.

There were constant problems
However, the residents have caused problems throughout the year. As the Minister of the Interior's response shows, there were an incredible 90 police operations in 2023.

Damage to property and dangerous threats
The reasons for the officers being called out range from the delivery of notices, damage to property, disorderly conduct and dangerous threats to the deployment at the fire in a garbage container on 27 December, where young female firefighters were harassed and firefighting work was obstructed. As many as 16 officers were deployed on that occasion.

13 arrests
In the total of 90 police operations, 13 arrests were made, ten of which were due to the "execution of arrest orders from the Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum". In addition, "a total of seven administrative offenses and 36 offenses under the Criminal Code were reported in 2023", the response also states. Following the incident shortly after Christmas, a total of 14 young people were transferred to federal quarters outside Upper Austria.

However, the inquiry also shows one thing: the promised increase in support staff has taken place. While there were only 13 employees in 2023, there have been 28 since 1 January.
