Tons of plastic waste have piled up on the beaches of the Indonesian dream island of Bali: a flood of bottles and cups, packaging and barely identifiable garbage.

The waste plague has become an annually recurring phenomenon, triggered by monsoon-influenced ocean currents, increasing pollution of the oceans, mass consumption and poorly functioning waste disposal.

Not only Bali's beaches are polluted, but also in forests, on riverbanks, around temples and on roadsides.

The situation is particularly bad on Kedonganan beach. As the "Bali Sun" reports, eight to ten truckloads of garbage drift onto the shore every day during the rainy season.

Every day, helpers collect tons of bottles, cups and packaging from Kuta's surfing beach, which are then taken away by truck. But the next morning, the garbage is already piling up again. Sunbathing in plastic waste - many a tourist looks rather dismayed at the disgusting scenario. A dream vacation looks different.

"There are simply too many people in Bali, and the Balinese themselves usually just throw their garbage into the landscape - it's almost part of the culture," says a receptionist. "Bali is not Singapore, and it will never be that clean here." What's more, almost every family has "at least two cars and three motorcycles".

Bali has been collecting tourist tax since February 2024
According to the government, it wants to invest the money in protecting the magnificent nature and culture of the "Island of the Gods" as well as in sustainable tourism and services. Bali is the only Hindu-dominated island in Muslim Indonesia and is famous for its unique traditions and rituals. However, around 70 percent of the funds - at least initially - will go towards tackling the waste problem.
