Oberwart’s dream of a 2nd division is a farce

The infrastructure will be renovated in future for the big goal of the "zwa" league. But the biggest construction site is the team itself! A commentary on the precarious situation at Ostliga club Oberwart.

The goal for the next five years has been clearly formulated. Oberwart wants to be playing in the 2nd division by then at the latest. To achieve this, numerous adaptations are being made to the infrastructure. But the biggest construction site at the moment is the team itself. A well-stocked - and probably not exactly inexpensive - squad that is simply not performing. It is no secret that Oberwart has a broad and healthy financial base. And if the rumors are to be believed, the club's account is also full to bursting - by Eastern League standards. The bottom line so far, however, almost resembles a real farce.

To put it into context: No one expects a promoted team to play their opponents to the wall by the dozen. Not even with a team like this. But the necessary attitude on the pitch - and the basic virtues of soccer that go with it - are essential. Without this basis, the club need not dream of the "zwa" league in the future.

Hopes rest on Rep

The reality is a relegation battle in the Ostliga, now more than ever. A scenario that probably no one expected. Oberwart's hopes now rest on Rajko Rep, who only made a brief appearance due to injury but, according to coach Guger, "played everyone dizzy with 40 percent in the first training session". Not a glorious performance for the squad. But good for the SVO to have another ace up its sleeve. The fact is: a reaction on the pitch is now urgently needed. To show what they are (really) capable of!
