The secret rooms under the advertising pillars
Wien Energie operates technical stations under the city to regulate district heating. The "Krone" was allowed to take a look at one.
Climate-neutral by 2040 and out of gas is the motto of the City of Vienna. District heating is an important instrument in this. "It is not only a convenient form of heating, but also efficient and sustainable," says Dominik Pernsteiner, Technical Coordinator for Raus aus Gas at Wien Energie.
However, to ensure that the district heating reaches all households easily, so-called GUFOs area converter stations are required. These extract the heat from the central network, which is responsible for transporting water heated to around 145 degrees, and transfer it to the local network.
A highway exit
Depending on the outside temperature, the water there then has a temperature of between 63 and 90 degrees Celsius. This is more than enough to heat homes to a comfortable temperature. A GUFO is therefore something like a highway exit for district heating, where the high temperature is throttled down to a lower one.
Very hidden
The "Krone" was allowed to visit one of the 600 GUFOs scattered around the city in the 2nd district near the Ernst Happel Stadium. And to say that the station is hidden would be an understatement. An inconspicuous advertising pillar covered with posters that can be opened is the entrance to the GUFO.
City to be climate-neutral by 2040
Six meters underground on an area measuring 5 by 16 meters, there is a structure under the city that consists mainly of pipes. "This is an important key element of district heating," says Pernsteiner. That's why the plan is to build another 50 stations by 2040. The pioneering areas include Gumpendorfer Strasse and the Alliertenviertel. Pernsteiner himself is certain that the city's goal of being climate-neutral by 2040 will be achieved.
