Election in Hallein
SPÖ triumphs, ÖVP draws no conclusions
Despite six rivals, city leader Alexander Stangassinger (SPÖ) wins a clear triumph. The ÖVP, on the other hand, has long faces - but resignations are not an issue for the time being.
At first, there was no great jubilation in the meeting room of Hallein town hall. The SPÖ members stared at the screen in disbelief. They could hardly believe the first projections. As time went on, however, it quickly became clear: the Social Democrats celebrated a huge triumph on Sunday and will have an absolute majority in the municipal council in future. And: incumbent Alexander Stangassinger won by an equally large margin - despite six opposing candidates, he was spared a run-off election.
"What else can you say? Simply unbelievable, we are grateful for every vote," the mayor told the "Krone" in an initial reaction. When asked about the many disputes with other parties in the past and during the election campaign, he said: "Every good idea for the city is welcome," he said in a conciliatory tone. Thanks to the gains, the Social Democrats will of course no longer have to make concessions to other parliamentary groups.
The loser of the election in Salzburg's second largest city is the ÖVP. Ten years ago, they still had an absolute majority in the municipal council. Now it is only just ahead of the Freedom Party in second place. In future, the SPÖ will have 15 mandataries, while the ÖVP and FPÖ only have three each. "That is absolutely sobering. It is still too early to say what the reason is," said top candidate Katharina Seywald. Despite the clear defeat in the mayoral election, resigning is not an issue for her: "I will continue to work. Let's see what the next five years will bring", the farmer remained combative.
KPÖ and Bürgerliste are in the municipal council
In addition to the Greens (two seats), the KPÖ Plus and the Bürgerliste Hallein are new to the Hallein municipal council with one seat each. "We were expecting a bit more, but it's a great result for us. We had an absolute cold start, we started from scratch," said Bürgerliste lead candidate Klaus Weickl on election night.
The FMÖ with top candidate Sandra Lindtner and the Neos will no longer play a role in Salzburg's second largest city. Both clearly missed out on a place in the city parliament. "The poor performance in the state election was probably too much for us," said Neos mayoral candidate Christian Münnich. At 22, he was by far the youngest candidate in the entire province. "Let's see what the future brings. I certainly won't be retiring for a long time yet."
