Animals as mental support
After a difficult season, Vanessa Herzog wants a conciliatory finish at the World Sprint Championships in Inzell. To achieve this, the speed skating queen is relying on animal support. And a fan community from Carinthia has announced its attendance at the World Championships.
Five alpacas, nine geese, 27 chickens and two mini pigs! Speed skating ace Vanessa Herzog has recently been recovering from the stresses and strains of the last few months at home on the farm in Ferlach. After a disappointing eleventh place in the 500 m at the World Championships in Calgary three weeks ago, the 28-year-old was already talking about the end of the season. A strong seventh place in the 1000 m brought a change of heart.
After her return, the first goal was to recharge her mental batteries. "The animals are Vanessa's lifeblood - she often spends ten hours a day with them," says trainer husband Tom, who also finds distraction from everyday life in the stables. "Feeding and mucking out is calming. We have cleared our heads and decided to take part in another race," emphasizes Tom.
In Inzell (D) - Vanessa's training "living room" - she will be competing in the 500 m and 1000 m events at the Sprint World Championships on Thursday and Friday. "A top place would be the top 6 - anything else would be a huge surprise," says Tom, who assigns the role of favorite to the Dutch women Kok and Leerdam as well as Takagi (Japan).
Fan community comes to the World Championships
What is special is that the whole family and even a delegation from the Olympic Center have announced their attendance to cheer Vanessa on in the last race of the season.
