Amstetten Salesians support numerous earthquake victims in Syria. A victim from the disaster area describes how important the help is.

A year ago, a violent earthquake shook large parts of Syria and Turkey. With dramatic consequences: 50,000 people lost their lives. Numerous religious from the Mostviertel region have been working tirelessly for the survivors ever since. "We are very active in Aleppo in Syria and support the local youth in particular," explains Father Siegi Kettner. The native of Waidhofen and the Salesians from Amstetten want to alleviate the suffering of those affected.

Like that of Christina Nihad Luxa. The 32-year-old was hit hard by the earthquake, along with her husband and two young daughters. "At 4.30 in the morning, the whole house suddenly shook. Amidst crying and screaming, my family and I ran outside and found refuge in the church," says the survivor.

Help and support
The days that followed were characterized by worry and uncertainty for the family. "The activities at the Don Bosco Center helped us to find a little security despite the difficult circumstances," says the 32-year-old, grateful for the help. The Salesians provide those affected in Syria with food, warm clothing and medicine. There are also educational programs for children and young people.
