Victory against Linz-Steg
TI-Volley wins women’s championship title for the first time
The women of TI-Volley won the AVL championship title for the first time ever on Monday evening. Defending champions Linz-Steg went into the match trailing 1-2 in the "best of five" final series and were beaten 3-1 (17,-21,-23,-20) in front of their own crowd despite taking a 1-0 set lead. The Innsbruck team thus added a third trophy to their Cup and Supercup victories.
The preliminary decision was probably made in the third set. The visitors led by up to four points for a long time before the Linzers scored five points in a row at 13:15. However, the Tyroleans equalized again at 18:18 and from 20:20 onwards they set the course for a 2:1 set lead. TI-Volley took a brisk 5:1 lead in the fourth set, but the hosts managed to turn a 6:9 deficit into an 11:9 lead. After that, the match was evenly poised again until 19:19, but from 21:20 onwards only TI-Volley scored the points.
"Mega. There was a bit of pressure and it was great that we made it," said a delighted Christina Plattner, adding in the ORF interview: "I wouldn't have believed it at the start of the season, but we played a great season." Her teammate Eva Stabentheiner was "a big load off her mind". "I'm so proud of the team, it was such a good team performance."
On behalf of the losing team, Linz captain Sophie-Marie Maass congratulated them. "They deserved to win." In retrospect, they should not have let their opponents take a 2:0 lead in the series and "we can't let it slip out of our hands today." Innsbruck was that little bit better.
Women ("best of five"/3rd game):
Steelvolleys Linz/Steg - TI-Volley 1:3 (17,-21,-23,-20)
Final score in the series: 1:3.
