U-turn on the highway
Another wrong-way driver causes a stir in the Ländle region
On Sunday morning, a 76-year-old car driver caused a few anxious moments on the Rhine Valley highway. The man simply turned around before the portal of the Pfänder Tunnel in the direction of Germany and then drove almost two kilometers as a wrong-way driver.
It is not yet known why the man had the crazy idea of turning around directly in front of the Pfänder Tunnel. What is certain is that he was neither drunk nor can he be classified as mentally disturbed. The fact that everything turned out well in the end is solely due to the attentiveness of other road users who were traveling in the direction of Germany at the time. Several drivers were just able to avoid the wrong-way driver, who was driving in the left-hand lane, and they also tried to draw his attention to his misbehavior by honking their horns and flashing their lights.
They succeeded: after almost two kilometers, he turned the vehicle around again and continued driving in the prescribed direction. The 76-year-old was eventually pulled over by the police in the Bregenz city area. He has been reported to the Feldkirch public prosecutor's office on suspicion of endangering physical safety in road traffic, in addition to several administrative offenses.
Curious fact: around a week ago, a road user had already made a U-turn directly in front of the Pfänder Tunnel and then drove a few hundred meters as a wrong-way driver - in the end, everything turned out well.
