Odermatt: “This is the last big goal”

The ski season is now officially over for Marco Odermatt, as he announces on Instagram. The Swiss dominator has won four World Cup globes this year, but he still has one big goal ahead of him.

Odermatt won the downhill classics on the Lauberhorn and in Wengen, but in Kitzbühel his rival Cyprien Sarrazin was beaming from the podium. The Kitzbühl victory is "still the last big goal", emphasized Odermatt at a media event organized by his outfitter Stöckli.

Nevertheless, the Swiss was unchallenged in the overall World Cup and won with a new record lead of 874 points. "I didn't even know it was the biggest gap. It's certainly special. It might last longer, next year someone else will win another bullet, but the record might outlast the season. It's a unique experience," says Odermatt.

Two Stenmark records remain
At the last giant slalom in Saalbach, the exceptional skier only just missed legend Ingemar Stenmark's record of ten RTL triumphs in ten races from the 1978/79 season. It was also Odermatt's first defeat of the season after twelve consecutive victories, meaning that Stenmark's record of 14 wins remains intact.

Odermatt: "Of course, the series became a big goal. Winning ten out of ten races would have been madness. I went there with that goal. But the series could have ended much earlier. It was very close several times. That's why it's completely okay."

"Don't feel like I'm in these spheres yet"
Being mentioned in the same breath as the best ski athletes of all time makes Odermatt proud. "These are names you looked up to as a child," says the 26-year-old, who emphasizes: "I somehow don't feel like I'm in those spheres yet."

Odermatt recently completed a few test days in Kvitfjell before heading off on a well-deserved vacation. "Race skis - see you in a few months," he wrote on Instagram. A major event is just around the corner next season with the World Ski Championships in Saalbach. With Odermatt as the big medal favorite...
