Final against Graz
First match point for St. Pölten’s women’s basketball players
Founded in summer 2023, already on course for a double in 2024. Doesn't exist? It does exist! After the Cup triumph, St. Pölten's women's basketball team is on the verge of winning the championship in its debut year. The "Wolves" are already 2:0 ahead in the best-of-five final series against Graz and can complete the big coup with a home win on Sunday (20:15, live on ORF Sport+). The fact that the SKN Ladies were allowed to start in the Superliga right after it was founded was due to the fact that there were too few teams.
The winning gene was practically passed down from the footballers. Austria's serial champions integrated the basketball players into the women's section. "It was clear to me right away that we had a strong team and that we would play at the top," grins guard Inga Orekhova. She once played for Atlanta in the WNBA and returned home to St. Pölten after stops in Belgium and Finland.
Future remains open
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree for the 34-year-old either: her mother Svetlana and father Sergei were both professionals themselves. And they gave their daughter a lot. At 1.88 meters, she not only stands out among the "Wolves" in terms of athleticism. Will she also be hunting baskets in St. Pölten next year? "That remains to be seen. A double would actually be a really nice way to end my career!"
