Buried while digging on the beach: Girl (5) dead
A trip to the beach has turned into a nightmare for a family in the US state of Florida: Two siblings - a boy and a girl - were buried in the sand while digging on the beach at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The daughter died as a result of the accident.
The boy and girl, aged seven and five according to NBC Miami, were both initially taken to hospital in a critical condition after being rescued from the sand.
Boy rescued
Private videos published by news broadcasters showed adults frantically digging in a sand pit with buckets and shovels. At first, the father found his boy, but the daughter was still somewhere under the sand, an eyewitness told Local10.
Hole 1.8 meters deep
According to the report, the girl was trapped under the sand for around 15 minutes before rescuers finally managed to free her. According to the reports, the hole was up to 1.8 meters deep.
It is unclear how such a large hole could have formed on the public beach promenade in the south-east of the state. According to NBC Miami, there have also been fatal accidents in connection with sand holes that suddenly collapse and bury people.
