Eating, bathing, gardening: All this is coming up in May

Most public holidays, nice weather and cool events: In the merry month of May, the Viennese are spoiled for choice when it comes to leisure activities. The "Krone" knows the best addresses.

After the cold snap in the second week of April, temperatures are finally on the rise again. The picnic blankets are spread out in the park and people are queuing outside the ice cream stores. Everyone wants just one thing: to get out of the apartment! And there are also a number of events that lure people outdoors and sweeten May.

Early morning pub crawls, beach parties and tattoos
On May 1st alone, the Viennese are spoiled for choice between the big May festival in the Prater (see also p. 42), the May festival in the Bohemian Prater and two free open-air beach parties at the Vienna Beach Club or in the "Himmel und Wasser" (sky and water) on Danube Island. The following weekend, the action continues with the Street Food Festival in front of the Stadthalle. If you want more action, you can make a detour into the city center, where the tattoo fair takes place at the same time. At the same time, the traditional Mailüfterl in Stammersdorfer Kellergasse takes place on the weekend of the 4th and 5th.

All hobby gardeners who are still looking for plants for their balcony and garden should make a detour to the City Farm in Augarten. Freshly harvested vegetables and young plants can be purchased here.

And when it gets really warm, the many outdoor pools provide the necessary refreshment. In keeping with the warm summer weather, Schönbrunn Bad was the first outdoor pool to open on Saturday. A handful of hardened bathers ventured into the cool water, while others preferred the deckchairs and the canteen. From May 2, the municipal outdoor pools will follow suit.

Here are the best events at a glance:

• 1st May Festival in the Bohemian Prater:In Favoriten, as a former working-class district, the 1st of May is traditionally celebrated in style. At 11 a.m., a lively morning pint with the "Oberlaaer Blasmusik" band gets the party started. Afterwards, the pop singer "Renate" and the Austropop duo "TWO" provide a great atmosphere and fun.
• Gourmetfestival in the Stadtpark:Already making plans for Mother's Day? A hot tip is the gourmet festival in the Stadtpark. Delicacies from all over Austria can be sampled at more than 100 stands. In addition to the classics, the menu also includes unusual delicacies such as Grammel pesto and Alpine caviar.

On Mother's Day weekend, the Stadtpark will become a gourmet mile.

• All organic: City Farm in Augarten kicks off the spring season on May 1 with a large garden festival (plant sale, culinary delights, children's area). Time: From 10 am to 6 pm. Organic young plants and freshly harvested vegetables can also be purchased on site from the farmers on May 2 to 4 and 9 to 11. cityfarm.vienna.

• Culinary delights and tattoos: there is a lot going on in front of and inside the Stadthalle on May 4 and 5. Outside, the Street Food Festival attracts visitors with delicacies from all over the world. Inside, the tattoo artists are at work. Culinary delights first, then a pecker?
