Missile attack on US military base in Syria
According to Iraqi reports, at least five missiles were fired from the back of a van at a US military base in north-eastern Syria from the Iraqi city of Zumar. The USA subsequently admitted the destruction of a missile launcher.
Two Iraqi security forces and a military officer told the Reuters news agency that a missile launcher had been parked on the back of a van in the town on the border with Syria. The military officer went on to say that the truck had caught fire due to the explosion of unfired missiles when US warplanes were in the airspace.
"We cannot confirm that the truck was bombed by US warplanes until we have investigated this," he said. A manhunt has also been launched for the perpetrators, who fled in another vehicle, a security official stationed in the city of Zumar revealed. The attack came a day after an explosion at a military base in Iraq killed a member of the Iraqi security forces on Saturday.
Hezbollah wants to resume attacks
Meanwhile, the Iranian-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah in Iraq says it is determined to resume its attacks on US forces in the country. A visit by the Iraqi Prime Minister to Washington has brought little progress in the talks on the withdrawal of US troops, according to Kataib Hezbollah. "What happened recently is just the beginning," the group declared, apparently referring to the attack with several missiles from northern Iraq on a US military base in Syria.
