Police exercise turned into an operation: fall in the Eisleitl

While descending from the Grossglockner on Friday, an alpinist slipped about 150 meters in the Eisleitl. By chance, professional rescuers were nearby.

Together with two other alpinists, a 68-year-old from Salzburg climbed the Grossglockner on Friday. On the descent at 12 noon, despite wearing crampons, he slipped and fell around 150 meters down the Eisleitl, rolling over several times. Injured, the man remained lying in the snow.

Coincidentally, Alpine police officers from the Salzburg Provincial Police Directorate were carrying out an exercise nearby at the time. They witnessed the fall and immediately climbed up to the injured man to provide first aid.

After stabilizing the 68-year-old, he was rescued by the C7 rescue helicopter using a rope and taken to the Tauernklinikum Zell am See. His companions remained uninjured and were able to descend independently.
