Several fatalities in high-rise fire in Hong Kong
A fire broke out in a high-rise building in Hong Kong on Wednesday morning. Five people were killed and 15 others were taken to hospital. The police had previously received numerous calls for help.
So far, five people have been killed in the fire. This was reported by several media outlets such as the "South China Morning Post", citing the police. According to official reports, the fire broke out at around 8 a.m.
Fire broke out in fitness studio
According to reports, the fire broke out in a fitness studio. It was under control after about an hour. Rescue workers used a turntable ladder to bring numerous people from their apartments to safety, as could be seen in photos.
Surrounding area had to close windows and doors
People in the area surrounding the densely populated metropolis have since been instructed to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke and stench. The administration of the affected district of Yau Tsim Mong set up a special contact point to provide assistance to the population if needed. According to the authorities, people who needed help were also able to seek shelter in a community center.
