Winter sportswomen seriously injured in accidents

On Thursday morning, two German winter sports enthusiasts ended up in hospital after tobogganing and skiing in Tyrol. A 28-year-old woman crashed her toboggan into a tree, while a 59-year-old woman fell several meters on a variant descent. Both women were seriously injured.

At around 8.40 a.m. on Friday morning, the 28-year-old German woman was tobogganing down into the valley from the Schweinfurter Hütte in Niederthai, a village in the Ötztal municipality of Umhausen (Imst district). "She lost control of her toboggan on a steeper, partly icy section and went over the right-hand edge of the path," said the police. After tobogganing a few meters over the slope, she crashed into a tree and sustained serious injuries. The German woman was first treated on the spot by the crew of a rescue helicopter and then flown to hospital.

Flown to hospital in Innsbruck
At around 11.30 a.m., the 59-year-old German woman was skiing downhill in the Hochzillertal ski area in the municipality of Kaltenbach (Schwaz district) on a variant descent in open terrain. The skier had an accident on a slope with a gradient of around 45 to 50 degrees and subsequently fell around 20 to 25 meters. "The winter sportswoman sustained serious injuries as a result," said the executive. After receiving first aid from other winter sports enthusiasts, the piste rescue team and the rescue helicopter team, she was flown to the hospital in Innsbruck.
