Museum for Eisenstadt
City villa to awaken from its slumber
The go-ahead has been given for the comprehensive renovation and conversion of the Stadtvilla in the provincial capital. The architectural jewel is to become a modern city museum.
Work is already underway in Eisenstädter Pfarrgasse. After all, the opening date for the new city museum has already been set. It is set to open on April 30, 2025. The date was not chosen at random. Exactly 100 years earlier - on April 30, 1925, the provincial parliament decided that Eisenstadt should become the capital of Burgenland.
"The construction of our own museum marks a milestone for the city and our community," explained Mayor Thomas Steiner during a site inspection. Many people have already come forward and donated exhibits and stories for the Stadtvilla. In future, visitors will be able to take a journey through time in the building - from the first documented mention of Eisenstadt to the present day.
Historic doctor's villa receives a salettl
"The town villa is a doctor's villa from 1950, which has been preserved in its original condition to this day," explains Steiner. But it is not just the historic building that is being restored: There are plans to build a salettl in the rear garden, which will serve as a multifunctional event space. Workshops for children and adults, lectures, special exhibitions and much more will be held there in future. The construction work should be completed by the end of 2024, after which the rooms will be designed. The city is investing a total of two million euros in the project. "It will certainly be something very special, I'm convinced of that," says the mayor.
The work will also have a minor impact on traffic. Pfarrgasse and upper Sankt-Rochus-Straße will be closed for a few days.
