Military truck got stuck: Major traffic jam in Salzburg
A foreign military truck, presumably loaded with large quantities of explosives, got stuck in a tunnel in Liefering late Monday afternoon. According to "Krone" information, the police closed off the tunnel extensively. The result was a huge traffic jam.
The vehicle was probably an American-made truck, as eyewitnesses reported to "Krone".Because the truck and probably a second one were probably transporting ammunition or ammunition parts and there were fears of ignition by electricity, the area was closed off for safety reasons.
The truck demolished cables from a trolleybus line while driving through a highway tunnel in the Salzburg district of Liefering.
However, police specialists quickly established that the contents of the containers posed no danger. Shortly after 7 p.m., the A1 was reopened to traffic. The truck was slightly damaged, but was able to continue its journey and be guided to the Schwarzenberg barracks in Siezenheim together with a second US military truck. From there, it will continue towards Germany on Tuesday.
Due to the closure, there were miles of traffic jams on the highway and in the city in the evening, and trolleybus services on two lines were also suspended.
It seems that the truck was probably on its way from Slovenia to Germany for a NATO exercise, as it had a transit permit. It is still unclear why the drivers decided to take the route with the highway underpass.
