Seven femicides

Protests against femicides are taking place in Carinthia's district towns on Thursday morning.
Carinthians are taking to the streets - to draw attention to the femicides. "The year 2024 has begun with seven brutal femicides. Any woman can become a victim, regardless of age, origin or social status," warns the Department for Women and Equality in Carinthia, which is working with women's advice centers to draw attention to the acts of violence on Thursday morning.
"Even if emancipation is still an irritating word for many people, I think it is immensely important that it is learned and taught at an early age in the sense of inner emancipation as liberation from one's own immaturity," says Angelika Hinteregger, head of the Upper Carinthian Girls' and Women's Advisory Service, adding: "This also includes breaking down clichés and role models that are still deeply rooted, especially in patriarchal societies, but also here in rural areas."
Swift action required
And the federal government is being called upon to take action: "The aim is to quickly develop and implement a national action plan for the protection against violence and to set up a permanent crisis team of the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Women's Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior in cooperation with the victim and violence protection institutions of the federal states in order to protect women's lives in Austria," said women's representative Sara Schaar.
Protests were held in Spittal, Villach, Klagenfurt and Wolfsberg.
