The city of Linz is planning to reclassify a large area of grassland for a ground-mounted PV system for the first time. 13 hectares south of the Franzosenhausweg industrial estate could be home to an agro-PV plant in the future. Work is also underway on the legal framework for a mandatory PV system for new buildings.

The increasing demand for environmentally friendly electricity will boost the expansion of photovoltaics in the coming years. As part of its "PV offensive", the city is investing in the installation of around one hundred photovoltaic systems on municipal buildings. The implementation of this project will start this spring. In addition, a new edict ordinance is being drawn up to make photovoltaics mandatory for new buildings on roofs in Linz.

In addition, the city is increasingly dealing with applications from companies and private individuals who want to install their systems not only on the roofs of buildings, but also on open spaces in the city.

Photovoltaic open space near Franzosenhausweg
An initial project for a 13-hectare area south of Dallingerstrasse, south of the Franzosenhausweg industrial estate, will be presented to Linz City Council on March 21. The implementation of the project requires a change to the zoning plan with regard to a special designation in grassland for photovoltaic systems.

"Mobilize all suitable areas"
"The path to becoming a climate-neutral industrial city largely involves switching to renewable energies. We are focusing very strongly on solar energy and the large-scale expansion of photovoltaic systems. Our goal is clearly to mobilize all suitable areas and make Linz more climate-friendly. At the same time, we want to preserve the high quality of life for the people of Linz. Therefore, the different interests must be carefully weighed up," emphasizes SP City Councillor Dietmar Prammer.

Transition to a sustainable energy future
"Ground-mounted photovoltaics is part of our efforts to promote renewable energies and accelerate the expansion of solar power. This also requires suitable space in the urban area. With this first project in Dallingerstrasse, we can lay the foundations for this. With clean and green electricity, we ultimately have the opportunity to drive forward the transition to a sustainable energy future," says City Development Director Hans-Martin Neumann, pointing out the advantages.
