Austria’s record-breaking Olympic athlete passes away

Great sadness for Hubert Raudaschl: the ÖOC record-breaking Olympic athlete has died at the age of 83.

As the Austrian Sailing Federation announced on Friday, the Salzburg native passed away last Wednesday. Raudaschl competed ten times at the Summer Games and is therefore unrivaled among the red-white-red athletes. In 1968 in Mexico City in the Finn class and in 1980 in Moscow together with co-skipper Karl Ferstl in the Star category, he won the silver medal in both cases.

Craftsman and pioneer
Raudaschl did not make his Olympic debut in Rome in 1960 as a substitute, after which he sailed continuously until the 1996 Games in Atlanta. In addition, two world and five European championship titles adorned his successful career. He also worked in St. Wolfgang as a successful boat builder, sailmaker and mentor, shaping both the national and international sailing scene. Many of his developments are still recognized in international sailing today.

"With Hubert Raudaschl, we are losing an outstanding personality in our sport," said Austrian Sailing Association President Dieter Schneider. "His successes and pioneering spirit are unique. He has shaped Austrian sailing like no other. His name will always be associated with the success story of Austrian sailing. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone who was close to him."

The holy requiem is scheduled for next Thursday (December 4, 10 a.m.) in the parish church of St. Wolfgang. This will be followed by a farewell service in the church square.
