Worker killed by pallet in Vienna city center

There was a fatal accident at work on Friday in Jakobergasse in the center of Vienna. A pallet is said to have come loose from a crane at around 8.15 am and fallen onto three construction workers. A 24-year-old died, the other two workers were seriously injured.

The pallet is said to have come loose from the crane from a great height and fallen onto the three victims. In addition to the arriving police officers, who provided first aid, several teams from the Vienna Professional Rescue Service and the Vienna Fire Brigade were also deployed.

One of the victims, a 24-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries. The emergency doctor was only able to determine that the man had died. The two other accident victims - 42 and 56 years old - were immediately taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"An investigation was started immediately in close cooperation with the labor inspectorate," announced police spokesman Philipp Haßlinger. The City of Vienna's crisis intervention team was also deployed. The construction site area was checked by the fire department for further hazards. Operations were suspended for the time being.
