School project promotes multilingualism
The "Schrödinger's Cat" blog aims to get A-level students interested in science. The "Krone" was allowed to look over the students' shoulders during the project.
Getting young people interested in reading is no easy task, especially when it comes to scientific texts. For this reason, the Austrian University Conference (uniko) launched the science blog schrödingerskatze.at back in 2015. It presents real-life scientific topics in a popular and easy-to-understand way. A pilot project is currently underway in the A-level class at Bfi Margareten.
Pupils write texts in the language of their choice
Pupils with a migration background write on the blog very personally and in their language of origin about why they read this particular story and why they recommend it to others. "I chose an article about the exploration of the planet Mars and wrote a recommendation in Panjabi," says Raman, who has Indian roots. Hamide, on the other hand, chose Turkish.
"We have around 40 nationalities at our school. German is our main focus, but it is important to promote linguistic diversity," says Headmaster Johann Karner. However, the majority of the class wrote their recommendation in German. But also in preparation for the central school-leaving exam, which is due next week.
