Icy conditions
Terrifying images from the Flèche Wallonne road cycling race in Belgium: Favorite Mattias Skjelmose was a victim of the icy weather conditions. The Dane was shivering all over in 3 degrees and sleet and eventually had to abandon.
A video circulating on X shows the 23-year-old shivering and completely chilled as he is carried off his bike and into a warm car by an attendant.
In the meantime, his racing team Lidl-Trek has given the all-clear. After a warm shower and hot drinks, Skjelmose was feeling better and no major treatment was necessary.
The conditions of the almost 200-kilometer one-day race obviously demanded everything from the athletes. Swiss rider Marc Hirschi also had to abandon 60 kilometers before the finish.
Only a third finish
The winner was Stephen Williams from Great Britain, ahead of Kevin Vauquelin and Maxim van Gils. In what were probably the most difficult conditions in the history of the semi-classic, only 44 riders, i.e. only a third of the starters, reached the finish line.
