Head-on crash after microsleep in Montafon
On Saturday afternoon, two cars collided head-on at high speed in St. Anton in Montafon (Vorarlberg). Miraculously, the people involved in the accident were unhurt, but both vehicles ended up as total losses.
At around 2.10 p.m., a 59-year-old driver from Switzerland was driving his car on the Montafonerstrasse out of the valley towards Bludenz with a passenger sitting next to him. In the municipality of St. Anton, the Swiss driver was suddenly overcome by fatigue and nodded off. The microsleep had fatal consequences: The 59-year-old's car drifted into the oncoming lane on a slight right-hand bend and crashed head-on into the car of a 67-year-old woman from Tschagguns.
The two vehicles were so demolished in the crash that the two drivers had to be freed by the fire department using rescue shears. Hard to believe: apart from a few minor scratches, the three people involved in the accident were completely unharmed.
