Roland Goeschl: Color becomes material

His colors were red, blue and yellow - and with them he created entire universes. Roland Goeschl (1932 to 2016) is one of the most important artists of the post-war avant-garde. The current exhibition at the MUWA - Museum of Perception in Graz is dedicated to him.

Some people in Graz will still remember the striking red, blue and yellow façade on Färberplatz. It is no coincidence that the Humanic logo is also made up of these colors: in both cases, the creator was the sculptor and painter Roland Goeschl.

Legendary Humanic advertising
Salzburg-born Goeschl was closely associated with the city of Graz in the 1960s and 1970s. Together with Horst Gerhard Haberl, Richard Kriesche, Wolfgang Bauer, H. C. Artmann, Otto M. Zykan and others, he was responsible for the innovative Humanic advertising, shot commercials and contributed the company's colors. Goeschl was also repeatedly involved in steirischer herbst and art in public spaces.

Underestimated avant-gardist
The MUWA in Graz is dedicating its current exhibition entitled "Color must become material" to this avant-garde artist, who is often underestimated and little known to the wider public. This already describes Goeschl's artistic approach. In the panel paintings, drawings and sculptures on display, color, surface and space engage in an exciting competition for supremacy - with the result that clearly defined areas of color create dynamic spaces.

Guided tour every Wednesday
Incidentally, Goeschl does not deviate from his strict color concept in any of the works on display, which makes their different effects all the more surprising. As always, Eva Fürstner relies on the MUWA motto "less is more" in this exhibition, but this does not detract from the vibrancy of Goeschl's works. The show is on display until 23 August, with a guided tour on the program every Wednesday at 4 pm.
