“Construction of the new bridge should start this year”
The storm in Neuhaus last summer also caused millions in damage. The work continues.
Mountain roads have been torn away, small streams have become raging rivers. The storms in the summer of 2023 with their immense amounts of rainfall also devastated parts of the municipality of Neuhaus. Mayor Patrick Skubel was in action for days as commander of the district fire department: "The damage was immense for us, over three million euros."
The entire village of Bach was flooded. There is no sign of this today. Skubel: "The people from the torrent and avalanche control and the agricultural department of the state did a great job. We probably couldn't have done it without their help."
The temporary bridge is still standing
There is not a single tree left along the newly constructed mountain road to Illmitzen, which was completely swept away by the floods: "The storm mowed everything down. The damage for the foresters is enormous," says Skubel. In order to be prepared for new storms, the Suha stream has been completely renovated and smaller streams in the Politschagraben are also to be upgraded. In Motschula, the pioneers' temporary bridge is still in place. Skubel: "The construction of the new bridge should start this year."
