“For me, the best player in the league!”
They did it! After the home win against the Fivers from Vienna in the WHA, the BT Füchse were overjoyed. With a 32:30 win, the Upper Styrian handball team secured their place in the top division ahead of time. But that's not all. Now coach Mario Maretic's team wants more.
The HIB Graz women's handball team was never in serious danger of relegation, and now the second Styrian club can breathe a sigh of relief and plan for next season in the WHA. As eighth in the table with 16 points, nothing can happen to the Füchse ladies. However, the Upper Styrians do not want to settle for relegation. The Maretic squad wants to make a big leap forward in the table in the remaining three rounds (first of all, bottom team St. Pölten awaits, then the derby against HIB, before facing series champions Hypo NÖ). "That's doable, apart from the leading duo, everything is close together. With three or four points more you're in the top five, we're going for it!" emphasizes Heinz Rumpold.
The Füchse chairman looks back on a mixed season, one of the reasons being the departure of home-grown talent. Like Alina Pirolt, for example. "She went to Bad Gleichenberg to study, others went to Vienna or Graz," explains the Füchse chairman. The club remains patient, hoping for three U16 team players. "There's no point in upgrading, we'll wait until our own youngsters come along.
Zizic often injured
In addition to the painful departures, the long absence of Nikoleta Zizic, who has been repeatedly sidelined by injuries over the past two years, was also a major setback. She showed just how valuable the top international is against the Fivers. "She won the game for us," says Rumpold. However, Maja Svetik has been the heart and soul of the Foxes this season. The 28-year-old Slovenian moved to Styria because of her partner and Füchse goalkeeper Urh Brana. A direct hit for the Maretic team. "For me, she's the best player in the league!" enthuses Rumpold.
