World Championship opener canceled after severe weather warning
The opening event of the World Triathlon Championship Series had to be canceled at short notice. Prior to the races on Friday and Saturday (today) at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, the World Triathlon Federation announced that they could not take place as planned due to severe adverse weather conditions. According to the specialist portal tri-mag.de, dismantling began again on Friday instead.
The National Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Authority of Abu Dhabi had announced on Thursday evening that outdoor events from Friday to Sunday would have to be canceled. The reason for this was a severe weather warning for Saturday.
Discussions with officials from the World Triathlon Federation about a partial program including para-races without an audience had failed.
