"Krone" commentary
True friendship
In the Austrian labor movement, i.e. in the ranks of good old Auntie SPÖ, people used to greet each other with "friendship". These days, however, this term has apparently taken on a completely new meaning among the comrades.
At least for the new party leader Andreas Babler with regard to his relationship with high-ranking party friends such as the three red state governors and the trade union bosses. Their statements increasingly contradict those of the party leader.
ON THE ONE HAND, of course, in a democratic party and in a free country, open and controversial discussions are allowed. That is clear.
ON THE OTHER hand, it must give sympathizers and party supporters of the SPÖ pause for thought that, for example, the chairman does not want to cooperate with "this ÖVP", while Governor Kaiser and Mayor Ludwig are calling for a new edition of the old, once grand coalition. Not to mention the constant criticism of the governor of Burgenland.
And when the - in both senses of the word - weighty trade union boss Josef Muchitsch calls for a more business-friendly course for the party, this is undoubtedly strong stuff, despite the demonstrative reconciliation that promptly followed in front of the media.
The worst thing for Babler, however, is the speculation about another top candidate for the upcoming National Council elections, as he is simply not budging in the polls.
