Because of solitary confinement
Lawsuit by right-wing terrorist Breivik dismissed
The detention conditions of Norwegian right-wing terrorist Anders Behring Breivik do not violate his human rights. This was decided by the district court in Oslo on Thursday. Breivik, who has since had his name changed, had accused the Norwegian state of violating his human rights by keeping him in solitary confinement for years (see video above).
He has been complaining about his prison conditions for years. The 45-year-old Norwegian has his own "ward" on two floors in Ringerike prison northwest of Oslo. Photos from there show, among other things, a spacious kitchen, a TV room and three budgerigars.
A Norwegian court of appeal had already ruled in 2017 that there were no human rights violations. The district court in Oslo has now also reached the same verdict. Breivik's lawyer has announced that he will appeal against it.
77 dead in his terrorist attacks
The right-wing terrorist first detonated a car bomb in Oslo's government district on 22 July 2011 and then carried out a massacre at a summer camp of the youth organization of the Social Democratic Workers' Party on the island of Utøya. A total of 77 people were killed in the terrorist attacks. They are considered by far the worst acts of violence in post-war Norway.
Maximum sentence received
In 2012, the Norwegian was sentenced to the maximum sentence at the time: 21 years of preventive detention with a minimum term of ten years. In contrast to an ordinary prison sentence, this means that the sentence can be extended every five years. In theory, Breivik could therefore remain behind bars until his death, although there is no life sentence in Norway. Breivik had already applied for early release, but failed in court.
