An unusual incident caused a major alarm in the Weinviertel region: a bus collided with an excavator on a construction site in Gänserndorf on Wednesday. When the fire department arrived, the scene was one of destruction: the force of the impact had lifted the construction machine, which weighed several tons, and flung it sideways onto a skip. However, the worker escaped with a fright.

Driver had a stroke of luck
As there were no passengers on the bus at the time of the accident, there were no injuries. Fortunately, the driver was not trapped in the vehicle either, as the excavator shovel had literally sliced open the side of the bus - just a few centimetres and the driver would have been in serious danger.

Using several cable winches from the fire department vehicles, the excavator wedged in the bus was put back on its wheels and secured at the side of the road. After cleaning the road, the fire department was able to return to the scene. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
